The children in P1 were developing their knowledge of height whilst using appropriate mathematical language. Their interest was captured by talking about their Christmas trees and if they had tall ones that almost reached the ceiling. Each child had to make a tall and a short tree. They were reminded that the bottom of their trees had to start at the same place in order to make a fair comparison. The children were then engaged in conversation using appropriate language of shorter and taller when comparing two items. When the children were comparing the height of more than 2 items they were encouraged to use shortest and tallest.
